Odd one out

Since there still seems to be plenty of room on the bandwagon, I thought I'd jump on. One of the following so-called facts about me is not true. Which one?

1. I hold a chainsaw certificate.
2. I've walked up Ben Nevis twice.
3. My first car was a Lada.
4. I used to be a NUPE shop steward.
5. I passed my driving test first time.
6. I once swam in the Baltic.
7. I ran away from boarding school, prompting a police hunt.
8. I used to ride an old MZ motorbike.
9. I once played at the Ulster American Folk Park in Castletown, Co. Tyrone.
10. I was once reviewed as “a pseudo-exploratory metaphysical ******** usually confined to Radio 3”.

Age? Stress? Reading through the list again, I momentarily forgot which one it was myself.

Easy - it's no 5, no one passes first time round, everyone knows that.

Must be No 3 - nobody would admit that if it was actually true.

I was going to pick number 5 but I see Niamh has beaten me to it! (p.s. I did pass first time...probably shouldn't have).

My second guess would be 7. We had several people run away from our boarding school (and several police hunts) but were you at boarding school...don't remember reading that.

As I know you reasonably well (or so I thought) I thought it best not to guess, but now that I have read them through I truly do not know which one is not true - so I will hazard a guess at number 8.

Hey, this is fun! Might do my own version! This is hard, as they're all so plausible. Oh, heck. And it's not giving me any advantage actually knowing for a fact some of these are true. And even your mum's at a loss. Though, cannily, I will have to go with her choice, no 8. No, I've changed my mind - I think your 1st car was a Skoda...

I'm going to go with #7 the boarding school/police hunt one (sounds so Val McDermid, or something).

What is a(n) NUPE when it's at home?

Very funny about the forgetting. When I was doing my list I tried to rearrange the original order and ended up with two on one line in the Google reader version.

Ok, Weavers 'guess' changes everything. She surely must know you DID go to boarding school, but then how does she not know you had an MZ motorbiker.Mmmm curiouser and etc

Thanks for all these responses!

I'm not going to reveal the answer just yet - just answer Poetikat's query. She may wish she'd never asked:)

NUPE was the National Union of Public Employees, the union that represented blue-collar workers in public services. It was not to be confused with the National Association of Local Government Employees (NALGO) which represented white-collar staff. The two were amalgamated along with COHSE in 1993 into UNISON (the letters of which, as I understand it, stand for nothing).

Hmmm... Well, either its no 4 or number 7... Would a shop steward for the blue collar workers be an ex-boarding school pupil? These two facts are surely mutually exclusive! Or I could be talking rubbish.

Ah, I'll go with no. 7

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Weaver was right: it was, in fact, No. 8!
